BREC’s Magnolia Mound Plantation, 2161 Nicholson Dr., presents French Creole Mourning in Early 19th Century Louisiana from October 1 – 31, 2008. Come and learn about typical early 19th century French Creole cultural customs surrounding death and mourning. Visitors will learn about the customs and decorative elements associated with mourning as practiced by the early 19th Century French Creole inhabitants of Louisiana. Visitors will learn interesting facts and superstitions surrounding mourning customs-such as why clocks were stopped at the hour of a loved ones passing or why all the mirrors in the deceased’s house were covered with black crepe. Attention Visitors: This exhibit deals directly with death and mourning customs. Though the exhibit and interpreted tour are presented in a tasteful manner, some of the information may be distressing to younger audiences. If planning a visit, we suggest calling ahead to discuss some of the material presented so that you can determine if the material is age appropriate.
