American Legion defines Memorial Day

BATON ROUGE (FOX44) - Former soldiers at the American Legion Post 38 in Baton Rouge paused to remember the true meaning of memorial day weekend.

This weekend you're probably catching up with family and barbecueing, or maybe just enjoying the fact that you probably have Monday off.

American Legionnaires told us this holiday actually evolved from "Armistice day", a day known to honor the Civil war.

If you have a vet in your family, the American Legion says to thank them, because they protect our freedom to have a three day weekend.

"The reason that they can enjoy that day off, is because of the sacrifice these men and women have done in the past. so please enjoy it, have a good time, but remember, freedom doesn't come free." said Commander Oliver Markland of Nicholson Post 38
