AMITE, LA — A 46-year-old Amite man has been arrested and charged with 30 counts of pornography involving juveniles, announced Attorney General Buddy Caldwell.

Vernon Sweeney of W Factory Road was arrested on Dec. 15, 2011 following a multiagency investigation by the Attorney General’s High Technology Crime Unit, the Amite Police Department, and the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Sweeney is accused of violating a state law forbidding a person to produce, distribute, possess, or possess with the intent to distribute pornography involving juveniles. He was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Prison.

The Attorney General’s High Technology Crime Unit has investigated thousands of computer crimes such as identity theft, Internet fraud, and cyber-stalking. Yet, most of the unit’s investigations have involved crimes against children--boys and girls ranging from the ages of six- months-old to 17-years-old. Investigators have said computer-facilitated child exploitation impacts children of all races and socio-economic levels. To report suspected cases of Internet crime, call 1-800-256-4506.
