LAFOURCHE, LA (FOX8) - A Lockport woman is in jail after police say an infant in her care suffered severe burns after allegedly being left unattended in a bathtub.

A spokesman with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office says officers were called to the apartment Sylvia Jacobs in reference to an infant with burns to the lower legs.

The child was taken to Baton Rouge General Medical Center by helicopter for treatment.

Police say the child had sustained third degree burns to 15 to 20 percent of the body, including the feet, ankles and buttocks.

Detectives learned that Jacobs was babysitting the infant at the time of the incident.

Jacobs claimed she put the child in a bathing chair for infants in the bathtub and left the water running while she left for an undetermined amount of time.

She claims that upon her return to the bathroom, she noticed the burns to the child’s feet.

Jacobs was booked with Second Degree Cruelty to a Juvenile. She remains there in lieu of $100,000.00 bond
