Barges get loose on the Atchafalaya River

Monday, May 23, 2011 - 6:06pm

The mighty Mississippi is open tonight, but that was far from the case earlier on May 23rd.
Four barges got loose on the Atchafalaya River near the Simmesport Bridge.

The bridge, which is on LA-1, was closed to traffic for a little over an hour as a precaution.

Officials said the empty barges did not hit the traffic bridge, but the railroad bridge was struck.

That railroad bridge is still closed tonight.

The Coast Guard says they corralled the barges.

Local fishermen pitched in a hand to help as well.
