BATON ROUGE, La (FOX44) — The state capitol is one step closer to getting a new monument on it's grounds. Representative Patrick Williams sponsored a bill to build a monument to the Ten Commandments near the on the capitol grounds.

He says many bills passed by lawmakers throughout time were based on the moral values honored in the Ten Commandments. He wants to focus on their historical impact on Louisiana.

"I'm not looking at it as far as it's religious value, Jewish value, or what-have-you," says Williams. "This is based on history, so I see no reason why it should be looked upon as anything, but such."

The House and Governmental Affairs Committee voted unanimously in favor of the bill. It will move the full House of Representatives for debate.
