BRPD is bringing back their police academy

BATON ROUGE, La (FOX44) - Big news for the Baton Rouge Police Department, they'll have their first police academy since 2009.
The 20 week academy will bring in 24 new recruits to help bring back some of the numbers lost within the department.
Chief Dwayne White says, BRPD can have up to 672 police officers and the agency is down 70.
All of the recruits will work on street patrol in high crime rate areas in the community once they graduate.
East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden says its being paid for out of the general fund.
The 20 week program begins in August.
