Community helps grant wish for young cancer patient

16-year-old gets swimming pool

DENHAM SPRINGS, La (FOX44) -- One young cancer patient makes a big splash. That’s after an entire community came together to make her wish come true.

Last summer, 16-year-old Camille Fry received some terrible news. Doctors found two tumors inside her brain. One is inoperable.

“This just kind of knocked the legs out of her,” says her father, Chris Fry. “It’s the most empty, horrid, ugly, ugly thing.”

Since then, Camille has struggled through a surgery and physical therapies. Despite the difficulties they face with the cancer, the family stays positive. “There’s a grim forecast and there’s the good forecast,” says Chris. “I just choose to listen to the good forecast.”

It’s that fighting spirit that attracted the attention of the Louisiana State Troopers Association. They heard Camille wanted a swimming pool. They made a few phone calls and got Guy Oliver with GW Oliver Construction on board.

“You realize that this is a really sweet family going through a big tragedy, so everybody pulled together and made it happen,” says Oliver.

People the Fry family hadn’t ever met took the plunge and donated to the cause. “It was an amazing process to see that so many people cared.”

The pool is priced at $40,000. For the people involved, it was worth every ounce of effort and money to see Camille and her family making waves.

“It just kind of shows you that there are good people in the world,” says Camille.

Camille will do more than beat the heat in her new pool. She started her first water therapy session Tuesday.

You can help Camille and her family by donating to her benefit fund at any Whitney Bank in the area. Just let them know that the money is going to Camille A. Fry.
