DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (FOX44) — Many local softball teams are heading to Sulphur this weekend with the hope of brining back a State Championship trophy.
A group of seniors on the Denham Springs softball team know all about playoff softball. They've been to the semi-finals, last year they even made it to the finals. The only thing missing for these girls is that championship victory and being their final year, it's now or never.
"I went into the donut shop a couple weeks ago and they asked if we were going to state and I was like ‘yes, we're going’,” Sydney McCullogh, senior, leftfielder, recalled. “So everybody is excited to see what we do."
The buzz around Denham Springs surrounds the Yellow Jackets softball team. The team is just 3 wins away from a state title. The program is no stranger to success. In fact, the team made run at a championship last year only to fall short.
“It's tough,” Natalie Landry, senior, leftfielder, said about the past experience. “We all feel the same. We are not going to settle for second place, because that four hour ride was not fun.
"it's a little disappointing to get all the way there you really hope to take all of it,” Madison Vige, senior, pitcher, added. “And to come up short a little bit, it does leave a little bad taste in our mouth, but we know we can come back and take it all this year.”
For a while, it looked as if they didn’t have what it takes to get back but a late season surge has them heading to the quarterfinals as a 17-seed.
"We preach that we really want to play our best towards the end and the last 15 games we really have turned it around,” David Bourque, Yellow Jackets Head Coach, notes. “Hitting better, pitching better and playing better defense."
And if you take a close look, there's still some room on the far right of this sign to fit 2012.
The Yellow Jackets will take on the Sam Houston. Many other local teams heading to Sulphur along with Denham Springs eyeing that state championship. All the action starts Friday.
