BATON ROUGE, La (FOX44) -- Here in the Capitol City a domestic dispute turned more violent this morning, putting one woman in the hospital. Forty-six-year-old Girard Smith is behind bars tonight. That's after deputies say he broke down the doors of his ex-wife's home and shot her in the neck.

We're told Smith got into an argument with the victim because she had another man at her home this morning. He allegedly hit the man in the head with his gun. The gun fired and hit his ex-wife.

Smith's parents say he called them shortly after the shooting. They were surprised. "Girard is a really good person," says his mother, Dorothy Smith. "He doesn't get into any trouble. You can check the books at the jail. He doesn't have a record."

The victim was transported to Our Lady of the Lake with non life-threatening injuries. The male victim was not injured.
