THIS IS A FOX44 NEWS UPDATE - One of the two fugitives captured in Memphis, TN is being returned to Louisiana to face charges of Unlawful Flight.
Ricky Wedgeworth was arrested March 13; it was his tenth day on the run from authorities. Both he and Darian Pierce escaped from a Baton Rouge police barrack on March 4.
A federal judge ordered Wedgeworth to be moved back to Louisiana to face the escape the charge. Pierce has a court hearing on Friday in Memphis.
Colonel Mike Edmonson stated that the State Police have already corrected some of the problems that could have led to the escape, but that the investigation is far from over.
MEMPHIS, Tn (LSP) - Today at approximately 5:30 p.m., State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson announced the capture of fugitive trustees Ricky Wedgeworth and Darian Pierce in Memphis, TN.
Earlier this afternoon, law enforcement agencies in Jackson, TN learned that Wedgeworth and Pierce tied up a county Parks and Recreation employee and stole his county work truck. A “Be On the Look Out” was immediately broadcast across the region. Around 5 pm this evening, a DeSoto County deputy observed the stolen truck and notified area law enforcement agencies. Shortly thereafter, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Memphis Police Department, and US Marshals Service attempted a traffic stop on the stolen vehicle (White, Ford Pickup, TN: GX2951) travelling on US Hwy 78 from DeSoto County into Memphis, TN. A pursuit ensued and the suspect vehicle eventually crashed at or near the intersection of Hacks Cross Rd and Winchester Rd in Memphis. Several Tennessee law enforcement officers were able to quickly apprehend Wedgeworth and Pierce.
NOTE: This morning Colonel Edmonson and Lt. Colonel Val Penouilh, Deputy Superintendent – Bureau of Investigations, flew from Baton Rouge to Jackson, TN to visit with investigators and assess the progress of the investigation. They then flew to Birmingham to visit the US Marshals’ Command Center. Upon arriving in Birmingham, they learned that law enforcement agencies were following up on leads related to the stolen county truck.
Colonels Edmonson and Penouilh are currently in route to Memphis, TN to meet with area law enforcement officers involved in the capture.
