Former New Roads mayor found guilty in federal court
NEW ROADS (FOX44) - Former New Roads Mayor Tommy Nelson convicted in federal court today.
The jury returned the guilty verdict after just one hour of deliberation.
Nelson showed no emotion as the verdict was read.
He was found guilty on seven charges, including wire fraud, lying to the FBI, and racketeering.
That's after Nelson took 22-thousand worth of cash and gifts from under cover FBI agents, posing as businessmen.
The defense had planned to argue entrapment, saying Nelson was set up, but Judge Tyson took that off the table, saying there wasn't enough evidence against investigators.
Now defense attorney Page Pate says that's where he will start the appeals process.
