BATON ROUGE, LA - Southeastern Louisiana second baseman Brock Hebert was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Monday.
Hebert hit .429 in five games last week and extended his hit streak to nine games. The junior from Bourg, La. (South Terrebonne H.S.), was 9 for 21, had three doubles and drove in six runs. He had multiple hits in three of the five games and now has 20 multi-hit games this season. He went 2 for 4 against both Tulane and Jackson State and drove in three runs against the Tigers. In the opener against UTSA, he went 3 for 4 and drove in two runs in a 5-2 victory. Hebert leads the conference with 17 doubles. After taking two of three games from UTSA, Southeastern has won five conference series this season and is tied with UT Arlington for second place in the league standings.
It is the fourth time in his career Hebert has been named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week. He was honored earlier this season on March 26 and once in each of his freshman and sophomore seasons.
Joining Hebert on the weekly conference honor roll is Sam Houston State right-hander Justin Jackson, who was named the Southland pitcher of the week.
Jackson took a no-hitter into the ninth inning in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at McNeese State, but gave up back-to-back one-out singles to break up the bid. He struck out 10 batters and walked one in the 4-0 shutout victory that improved his season record to 7-3. The Bearkats are 28-11 overall and are 17-4 in league play with a four-game lead with 12 conference games remaining.
The Lions travel to Sam Houston State, a team they trail by four games in the conference standings for first place, May 11-13.
Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to Lamar junior designated hitter Seth Dornak, Sam Houston State freshman first baseman Ryan O'Hearn, UT Arlington sophomore shortstop Ryan Walker, UTSA senior utility player Casey Selsor and Texas State senior second baseman Tyler Sibley. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to McNeese State freshman right-hander Michael Clemens, Southeastern Louisiana freshman right-hander Andro Cutura, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior right-hander Daniel Minor and Texas State junior left-hander Colton Turner.
To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland baseball sports information contacts. Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
Southeastern (28-13) travels to face No. 3-ranked LSU (32-9) Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. The Game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) or online worldwide at www.LionSports.net.
