BATON ROUGE, La (FOX44) - The Department of Public Works has been inspecting the levees at least twice a day for weeks.
FOX44 was invited to go along for an inspection Tuesday.
The whole process takes over an hour. They inspect the entire system, from the levee itself to the newly installed tiger dam.
"They're constantly being watched and monitored", says Jim Ferguson - Chief Engineer at the Department of Public Works.
Ferguson says those inspections are one of the only times a problem can be stopped before it gets out of hand.
"It gives us time to react and deal with it", says Ferguson.
Ferguson says things like ponding and sand boils near the levee has happened - and it is normal when the area floods. If you have concerns - call the Mayor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness at (225) 389-2100.
