STATE COLLEGE, PA - Joe Paterno has been fired as the head coach at Penn State. Paterno announced Wednesday that he would retire at the conclusion of the 2011 season. School president Graham Spanier has been dismissed also.
"We thought that because of the difficulties that have engulfed the university, and they have been grave, it was necessary to make a change in the leadership to set a course for new direction," John Surma, the Vice Chancellor of the Board of Trustees, said Wednesday night.
Tom Bradley has been named interim coach. He was the defensive coordinator under Paterno.
