K-9 officer dies in line of duty due to heat stroke

ST. MARTIN, LA (FOX44) — Two male teens being held at the St. Martin Parish Juvenile Detention Center attempted to escape the facility on Saturday, Aug. 6. The St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office activated their K-9 unit to track them down. During the pursuit, sadly, one member of the team did not make it back to home base.

The incident happened just before 10:00 a.m. The two juveniles scaled razor wire fences and ran into the woods located outside the property. Canines were used to track the missing juveniles, who were both injured during their escape attempt.

Hatos was one of the K-9’s who was deployed to track the duo. The animal was over come by the extreme heat and died of a heat stroke.

The juveniles were treated at a local hospital for the injuries they sustained and have been placed back at the detention center. They are facing attention charges of Simple Escape.
