BATON ROUGE, La (FOX44) — An award winning casting director comes to Baton Rouge to train actors. Joey Paul Jenson was conducting a workshop at Celtic Studios for young talent. Tammi Arender got a chance to chat with Jenson in between acting sessions.
Joey Paul Jenson starts her acting workshop with warm up exercises. She tells her students, that like any instrument, your body, mind and voice need to be tuned before you use it.
Jenson comes to Baton Rouge from Los Angeles. She's been a casting director for some 20 years with over 50 feature films to her credit.
"I like to work with young people who have a great interest in show business and make them feel it’s a tangible goal,” says Jenson. “That it's not just something to dream about. You want to give them a practical course and make them feel it can happen for them."
15 year old Eric Carney of Central is hoping ‘it’ happens for him. That’s why he takes acting lessons from Debby Gaudet and signed up for Jenson’s acting workshop. Carney discovered acting isn't as easy as it looks, even if you've performed live on stage.
"Theatre and acting, they're so different,” says Carney. “Coming into it I thought it was going to be easier having that theatre background.”
And that's why not everyone makes it, it’s not as easy as it looks. But Transformers star Shia Labeouf did make it. Jenson gave Lebeouf his first series role. She also cast Jessica Alba in her first TV series. For Jenson it's not about making someone famous. It's about building confidence in your communication skills."
“It's becoming more comfortable in knowing who you are,” says Jenson. “What your strengths and weaknesses are and your ability to communicate. Because when you communicate it really doesn't matter if you're an actor, a doctor, a scientist; you want to communicate well for good relationships in your life."
Jenson will be casting a movie in Baton Rouge in the Spring called "When the Game Stands Tall". For more information on Debby Gaudet's Young Screen Actors you can call: 504-613-7346 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org
