Many don't know where tax dollars going
LIVINGSTON, La (WVLA) -- A disagreement over thousands of dollars has Livingston parish residents wondering where exactly their tax money is going.
In 2003, residents voted in favor of a property tax for the Council on Aging. The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office collects that tax. Over the last six years it has taken 12% commission, amounting to around $300,000. That money was going to the general fund, but yesterday, a judge ruled that commission illegal.
The sheriff's attorney says the dispute is a matter of two different interpretations of the tax law.
The judge ordered the sheriff's office to refund the money to the Council on Aging, but the sheriff's office plans to appeal the decision.
That property tax is renewable in 2013.
