
BATON ROUGE, La (FOX44) - Three games and three victories. Mikie Mathook smashed four home runs and Tiger pitchers held their opponents to just eight runs as LSU (3-0) swept Wake Forest (0-3) over the weekend.
The season opener on Friday was close for a half of an inning then LSU scored six runs in both the bottom half of the first and second innings and went on to route the Demon Deacons, 15-4. Ben Alsup allowed one run on five hits in front of a record crowd of 10,055.
On Saturday, fans were treated to a pitchers duel. LSU trailed for the first time of the season but rallied by scoring a run in both the seventh and eigth innings and held on to win, 4-3. Freshman pitcher Kevin Gausman settled down after allowing a run in the first two innings. Gausman struck out six batters in five and two-thirds innings of work. Also, freshman second baseman Jacoby Jones went 3-for-3 at the plate including his first collegiate home-run.
In the series finale freshman pitcher Kurt McCune shined in his debut as a Tiger by pitching six-inning allowing only one hit and no runs. Mikie Mathook hit his fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning, a three-run shot that would put the Tigers up 5-0. Mason Katz also hit a three-run home run later in the game. LSU would go on to win the game 9-1.
LSU will return to the diamond on Tuesday as they host UNO (1-2) at 6:30 p.m. Junior Tyler Jones will get the start on the mound for LSU.
