Man shot to death when he tries to stop carjacking
NEW ORLEANS, LA (FOX8) - A good Samaritan was shot to death when he tried to help a woman who police say was being carjacked.
It happened around 7 a.m. in the 500 block of Vallette Street in Algiers Point.
Witnesses say the man was walking his two children to school, when he heard a woman screaming. She was trying to get into her vehicle, when the suspected robber tried to steal her keys. When the shooting victim tried to help, the attacker pullled out a gun and shot him three times.
The 44-year-old shooting victim fell down in a nearby yard. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police say the gunman fled on foot toward Opelousas Avenue. Detectives describe the attacker as a black male, in his mid-20s to mid-30s. Investigators are working with witnesses to develop a composite sketch of the attacker.
Police say the woman and children were not injured.
Martin Behrman Charter School, in the 700 block of Opelousas Avenue has been placed on lockdown since the incident.
