Man wanted for Texas murder arrested in Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE, La (WGMB) --US Marshals arrested a man in Baton Rouge Wednesday who was wanted in connection with a brutal murder in Austin, TX.
Investigators say, 49 year old Juan Reza Ortiz had been living in St. Gabriel under the name Jaime Dominguez.
According to police, Ortiz was allegedly involved in an argument with a woman at an Austin apartment complex in August of 2000.
During the attack, they say, Ortiz used a 2X6 piece of wood to beat the woman in the head and body.
The victim died from the injuries.
Witnesses told investigators they saw Ortiz running from the scene.
Detectives and US Marshals investigators caught up with Ortiz in Baton Rouge where he was believed to be living with his wife.
They connected an old thumb print of Ortiz's with one authorities got from him for an arrest in Iberville Parish.
Task Force investigators determined that Ortiz was living in St. Gabriel, observed him leave his residence and arrested him in the 5300 block of Nicholson Drive while he was on his way to work.
Ortiz was taken to the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison awaiting extradition back to Austin.
"Unlike a sporting event the tenacity and dogged determination of the United States Marshals Service does not end when the whistle blows," said US Marshal Kevin Harrison. "Mr. Ortiz found out today we keep playing until we prevail. Hopefully with his apprehension the victim's family will find some long awaited peace of mind."
