BATON ROUGE, La (Fox44) — Four men accused of breaking into a Gonzales home and killing three people got their day in court.
Michael Aikens, Devon James, Bernard James, and Rolondo Durrell Stewart all pled not guilty to a list of charges Tuesday. Those charges include three counts of first-degree murder.
A fifth suspect, Travis Moore, pled not guilty in March.
It’s been two months since Diane Domingue’s friend and bowling partner has been to the lanes.
“It’s an obvious thing when you come in on a Tuesday night or a Thursday morning and you were expecting to see her and she’s not here anymore,” she says.
Shirley Marchand, her husband Irwin, and her son, Douglas Dooley, were brutally murdered inside their home on Babin Road in Gonzales back in February.
“It’s a callous, senseless act that just shows how little life means to some people,” Domingue says. “It’s scary.”
Police say the deadly home invasion was linked to a safe filled with rare coins that went missing the night of the murders.
“It’s truly like spitting on their graves,” Domingue says. “It couldn’t possibly be worth that. No amount of money could be.”
Since then, Domingue has kept a close eye on the case. “That was some relief before the last of the three had been put in the ground, there was somebody already in custody.”
On Tuesday, four of the men accused of the murders pled not guilty in court. A fifth pled not guilty back in March. Domingue wasn’t surprised.
“I kind of expected it in this kind of crime for them to deny it,” she says.
Still, she’s hopeful that the people who did this will eventually confess. “One day on this earth, or in the next, they’ll have to admit what they did. They’ll have to admit.”
Not a day goes by when Domingue doesn’t think about her old friend. “The world is a lesser place without her,” she says. “She had the sweetest smile, the greatest laugh. I miss her horribly.”
She’s just keeping faith that someone will be brought to justice.
“We’re trusting on the jury system that they’ll get what they deserve.”
Pre-trial motions are set for June 19th.
