BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44)— A Shreveport man has been arrested and charged with Medicaid fraud and theft, announced Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell.
Donald Ray Wright, 45, of Shreveport, surrendered last week to the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and was charged with 10-counts of Medicaid fraud and one-count of felony theft. Wright was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
Attorney General Buddy Caldwell said, “Our message could not be clearer--we have zero tolerance for Medicaid fraud which robs taxpayers and threatens necessary services. We will continue to work together with other agencies to ensure that laws are enforced and tax dollars are recovered.”
Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) Secretary Bruce D. Greenstein said, “This is another terrific example of how state agencies are working together to eliminate Medicaid fraud and abuse in Louisiana. Individuals who take advantage of the trust placed in them and steal from the people of Louisiana have no place in our health care system. It is imperative that we bring them to justice, and I assure all Louisiana taxpayers that the Department will continue to collaborate with the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit to protect the money invested in this program and the people it serves.”
Wright, a personal care attendant, submitted timesheets stating that he provided caregiver services, such as cooking, cleaning, and bathing, to a Medicaid patient on the same dates and times the patient was actually receiving care at a Shreveport hospital.
Personal care attendants are hired by Medicaid providers to care for physically handicapped Medicaid recipients. The personal care attendants keep service logs and records of hours worked with each client and submit the hours to the Medicaid provider for payment. In turn, the Medicaid provider submits the hours to the Medicaid program for payment of services rendered.
