BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) - A double homicide happened at a Baton Rouge auto parts store over the weekend, and East Baton Rouge Police say the man who shot and killed those two people has been captured.
Investigators say Lee Turner Jr. was the person who gunned down Randy Chaney, 54, and Edward Gurtner,43, Sunday afternoon at the Carquest on Airline Highway near Siegen Lane.
Deputies haven't released many details, but say it appears he was trying to rob the store because money was found scattered all over the store.
Sheriff Sid Geautreax has scheduled a press conference to discuss the details of turner's arrest.
As of right now, NBC33 has been informed Turner will be charged with two counts of First Degree Murder and Armed Robbery.
The shooting has left business owners in the area a little on edge.
The doors are still locked at the Carquest tonight, but the dozens of neighboring businesses are open. One of them is Chuck Saia, the owner of Backyard Adventures - just feet from the crime scene.
He says his store has been hit by burglaries and small things before, but the shooting, so close by, brings things to a new level.
“We can deal with the small petty thefts. It’s just that when lives are taken, it’s a whole different situation,” stated Saia.
This part of East Baton Rouge parish doesn't see a lot of violent crime. In fact, EBR deputies say the weekend shooting is an anomoly for the area. But even so, a lot of business owners here say this shooting as them a little on edge.
While deputies are still working to get to the bottom of this shooting, they along with business owners aren't assuming it won't happen again just because of the area.
“We all become kind of immune to it,” said Saia. “We think it can’t happen in our area but one should always be weary. You get numb to it but it’s still not right - people shouldn’t do terrible things like this.”
