New food facility will create jobs in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, LA -- Today, Gov. Bobby Jindal was joined by Freshy Foods LLC owners Floyd and Ida James to dedicate a 50,000-square foot, pre-packaged food facility that will allow Freshy to create 185 new direct jobs by the end of 2013. The project also retains 50 existing jobs at the Elmwood food facility.

Gov. Jindal said, “This is great news for Jefferson Parish and an exciting expansion for Southeast Louisiana. Freshy Foods had the option to move to other states, including Texas, but the owners chose to reinvest and expand their footprint right here in Louisiana. Economic development is our top priority and we continue to work tirelessly to encourage companies to expand within our state. Today’s announcement means 185 new jobs are coming to Jefferson Parish – a great economic opportunity for the workers of Jefferson Parish.”

John Georges said, "As a local food distributor we are excited to see fresh products made right here in our backyard made daily. It's a great fit for our distributors. This is a great example of a small company that will be making its national footprint in a short amount of time. This location would not have been possible without the help of Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO), and Jefferson Parish President John Young. Gov. Jindal has made creating new, quality jobs his top priority since taking office and today is a great example of that."

Founded in 2009, Freshy Foods began to outgrow its original facility in Hammond in early 2011. Since moving to a new 50,000-square-foot facility in Jefferson Parish three months ago, Freshy hired an additional 35 full-time workers for a total of 50 employees. Company officials expect to add 50 more direct jobs by the end of 2012 and an additional 100 new direct jobs by the end of 2013 for a total of 185 new jobs at the facility.

“This is truly a great day for Jefferson Parish,” said Jefferson Parish President John Young. “We are excited that Freshy Foods moved their entire operations to our parish, which will not only create new jobs but will be a significant contributor to our economy.”

“Relying on our current success and the continued forecasted growth of the fresh food category within the food service market, we realized that a significant investment in a facility was needed in order to leverage the demand for fresh, convenient, packaged food,” said Freshy Foods owner Floyd James. “We are eager to begin our work in the business community.”

The new facility will allow Freshy Foods to be closer to its Direct Store Delivery distributors and allow the company to produce fresh foods for 15 states across the South.

“We are delighted that Freshy Foods chose to reinvest and expand their operations in our state,” said LED Secretary Stephen Moret. “Supporting the retention and expansion of Louisiana’s existing businesses has been and will continue to be our top economic development priority.”
