BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) - A new law is in effect that will make stricter guidelines for those trying to make money with scrap metal.
House Bill 195 prohibits certain purchases of junk, and requires that a receipt of that purchase be kept for three years.
It also requires inspection of these purchases from police, prohibits the purchase of scrap metal from kids under 18, and will regulate the purchase of certain metals, like copper.
Lawmakers in the capitol city say that this law is a big step in stopping of would-be scrap thieves.
"if it's someone who sells it without a receipt, that whoever buys it is either fined or there is some kind of reprocussion from it." -said Representative Pat Smith, (D) Baton Rouge
