BATON ROUGE, La (FOX44) — Big news for Southern University A & M. The school has a new chancellor.
James Llorens was appointed chancellor of Southern University just before noon Friday. The decision was made at a systems board meeting.
He was chosen despite system president, Dr. Ronald Mason's recommendation to wait another two weeks before making a decision. He said he wanted more time to deliberate on the three candidates left in the running.
His recommendation was met with frustration. Some committee members felt waiting any longer to make a decision was unfair to the Southern students.
Llorens was voted into the position by 11 board members. He says he's honored to be chosen. "My heart is in academia. My heart is with Southern University, so I really welcome the opportunity to come back and contribute to it," he says.
Llorens is the assistant chief administrative officer to East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden. He will replace Dr. Kofi Lamotey, who stepped down from the position in the fall.
