Obama passes 'fair sentencing act'
BATON ROUGE, LA. (FOX44) - Thousands of inmates sentenced on certain "cocaine charges" could get out of jail way earlier than expected.
Changes in penalties that go into effect today reduce the consequences for "more addictive" crack cocaine bringing them in line with those for "powdered cocaine."
The move comes after critics said sentencing for "crack cocaine" use to affect more black defendants than white ones.
Obama okaying the "fair sentencing act" means nearly 12-thousand inmates will have their sentences reduced eventually and two thousand will be eligible to walk free now.
