BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) -- A man is shot dead by a Lafayette Police Officer after the officer is backed over by the suspect's car. It happened on the Evangeline Thruway near Castill Friday night, around 11:20 p.m.

In a press release, Louisiana State Police says Anthony Sonnier, 46, was driving a car seen at an earlier stabbing and was pulled over by a Lafayette Police Officer. When the officer was walking to the car, LSP says Sonnier backed the car into the officer.

After being hit by the back of the car, the officer fired several shots into the car, killing Sonnier. Right now, the police officer is on paid administrative leave, which is police policy anytime an officer is involved in a shooting. He was not hurt.

Sonnier's death is being investigated by Louisana State Police.
