Opening arguments begin in "Operation Blighted Officials" federal case
BATON ROUGE, La (FOX44) - In Baton Rouge Federal Court, opening arguments starting in the second trial in what has become known as “Operation Blighted Officials.
The State and Defense played highlight reels of a few key conversations in their opening arguments where Nelson was speaking with undercover agents.
One shows the former mayor accepting an envelope of cash, in others, Nelson clearly says he's not interested in money and just wants what is best for the citizens of New Roads.
Both sides agree that the investigation was sparked by St. Gabriel Mayor George Grace, who they say invited Nelson and two other local mayors to New Orleans to hear about the business and get treated to Saints tickets and a hotel stay.
Court resumes on June 8th at 9am, when the first witnesses will be called.
