BATON ROUGE, La (FOX44) - — People from across Baton Rouge came out to the Office of the State Marshal from six until eight p.m. Monday for the "How to protect yourself from Home Improvement/Home Fraud Repair Workshop". Vicki Picou of Pontchatoula only had to look next door to know why she needed to come,"we had wonderfully kind, intelligent neighbors who got scammed."

She doesn't want that same fate to happen to her or her husband Tom, "with the damage from Gustav that we saw in our neighborhood, if it happens we'd like to be ready."

Joel Donangue of the Fire Marshal's Office has a few tips for people like Vicki and Tom to get and stay prepared so that they can do just that, "one is always ask to see their license, contractor's liceense...proof of insurance is another thing."

He says, though, when it comes down to making that tough decision, make sure to trust your instincts, "go with what your gut tells you, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably, usually is."
