More choices for pet medical treatment
BATON ROUGE, La (Fox44) -- More and more people are taking advantage of the latest technology when it comes to keeping their pets healthy.
Gideon, a St. Bernard, has a heart condition, but thanks to advances in veterinary technology, his problem stays under control. At South Sherwood Animal Hospital in Baton Rouge, Gideon is just one of hundreds of dogs that have been saved by modern medical procedures everyday.
"Ten, fifteen years ago, the thing's we're doing today were figments of our imaginations," says Dr. Alfred Stevens. "Now, we can do just about anything that you can do in human medicine."
Pets are getting the same treatment that some of their owners receive for similar problems. "They're saying, my gosh, if they can do it in people, can't they do it in animals?" Pets can now have everything from kidney transplants and dialysis to joint replacement and stem-cell therapy. And the list goes on. "MRIs, CT scans, laser therapies, ultrasound work, endoscopies."
For pet owners, this means having options. "The owners then have to make that decision," says Stevens. It's procedures, like Gideon's, that give man's best friends the chance to live longer, healthier lives. "That's what it's all about," says Stevens. "Improving the quality of a pet's life while they remain."
