NEW YORK, NY (FOX44) – Take to the high seas in 3D with Hugh Grant helming the ship for "The Pirates! Band of Misfits". The animated stop-motion adventure has Grant's pirate captain battling rival pirates, a pirate-hating queen and one curious scientist. Grant says taking on the role of swashbuckling captain was a little nerve wracking at first.
Grant says: "I had been doing the voice for a couple of sessions, is this going to be alright? Is this working? But then, they take it away and they do some animation and they showed it to me and they're such geniuses, they're doing 90 percent of your performance for you, and adding extra jokes everywhere, and after that i was relaxed."
He was happy to stay in the voice booth, leaving the complex animation to the experts.
Grant says: "I’d do a shocking job, I’m completely cack-handed, I can't even use scissors. But I enjoyed watching these strange little men in Bristol, doing this thing of changing, changing my mouth 24-times for each second of the film, and then the beard and then the eyes."
Like many actors who do kid-friendly flicks to impress young ones in their lives, Grant hopes that one day his daughter will recognize dad as the pirate captain.
Grant says: "I did actually sign up for this before I knew I was having a baby. But I’m delighted that my daughter one day will see this, although if she's' like any of my young cousins, she won't recognize my voice anyway."
And clearly it's a project close to his heart, bringing him out of semi-retirement.
Grant says: "I’ve always been a bit reluctant, and I haven't done very much in the last few years, apart from little curiosities that tickled my fancy like this or a strange film I made last autumn. So yes, on the whole I don't do much now."
And there's one pirate tradition that Grant plans to take with him as he continues on his journey.
Grant says: “Our big treat is ham night. And I think that's my favorite thing in this film."
