Port Allen mayor admits to taking bribes
PORT ALLEN, La (FOX44) - Mayor Derek Lewis admits he took bribes from undercover FBI agents and stepped down on June 28th.
Lewis was set to stand trial in July, after being indicted for taking bribes in a federal investigation called 'Operation Blighted Officials' but the former mayor waved his right to a trial today, opted instead to strike a deal with U.S. attorneys, that could keep him out of federal prison.
After admitting in court, he traded his power as mayor for money and gifts, Lewis walked out of federal court without comment. As part of the deal, Lewis will work with U.S. attorneys as they prepare for upcoming cases. Port Allen police chief Fred Smith is set to stand trial in July. St. Gabriel Mayor George Grace heads to court in January. Two other local mayors have already been convicted.
