Port Allen officials indicted by Federal Grand Jury

In a special press conference this afternoon U.S. Attorney Donald Cazayoux, Jr. announced Port Allen Mayor Derek Lewis and Port Allen Chief of Police Frederick Smith have been indicted by a Federal Grand Jury.

“We believe that we need to root out public corruption wherever it exists and we’re going to continue to do that because we know Louisiana deserves its public officials to be honest,” U.S. Attorney Donald Cazayoux said during the press conference.

The charges include 22 counts of violating the Rico Act, mail fraud, wire fraud, and forfeiture.

The indictment alleges the two officials took bribes in exchange of using their positions to benefit business owners. The idictments are a part of an ongoing FBI investigation.

So far six public officials have been charged. Both Lewis and Smith face up to 190 years in prison and millions of dollars in fines.
