Second fatal pedestrian related accident in Livingston Parish this week

Thursday, February 9, 2012 - 2:17pm

DENHAM SPRINGS, LA — Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a fatal crash last night involving a pedestrian. The crash occurred shortly before 7:00 p.m. on LA 16 north of LA 1030 in Livingston Parish.

Troopers’ investigation revealed that a 2006 Toyota pickup, being driven by James Cowell, 46, of Walker, was traveling south on LA 16 in the outside southbound lane when it struck a pedestrian.

The pedestrian was lying in the southbound lane before he was struck by the pickup. He was pronounced deceased by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s office at the scene. The pedestrian was later identified as Darwin Carson, 47, of Denham Springs through fingerprint analysis performed by Louisiana State Police Crime Lab technicians.

Cowell was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was not injured. Impairment was not a factor on Cowell’s part. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor for Carson, but Troopers have submitted a sample of his blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.

No charges have been filed in connection with this crash.

This is the second fatal crash involving a pedestrian that has occurred this week. Troopers remind motorists to always pay close attention to the roadway and their surroundings while driving. Pedestrians are reminded to stay out of the travel lanes, walk AGAINST traffic, wear reflective or light-colored clothing, and stay in well-lit areas. Pedestrians must be aware of their surroundings at all times and must always be prepared to react to traffic in an instant.
