Sherburne and Happy Town to be re-opened
ST. MARTINVILLE, La (FOX44) — St. Martin Parish Officials plan to re-open Happy Town, Sherburne, and the remaining portion of Herman Dupuis Road from Dick Davis Park to the Pontoon Bridge. That will happen Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. The mandatory evacuation order will change to a voluntary evacuation for that area.
Officials say the water is still continuing to rise, especially in low lying areas west of the Atchafalaya River Hwy levee. They say the water is rising slower than expected and it may take several days to recede.
Officials say residents will need to show proof that they live in the area for re-entry. They are also advising residents to be wary of mosquitos. Parish officials have arranged for Mosquito Control to spray the area every night until further notice, and they're urging residents returning to the area to protect themselves from the possible spread of mosquito borne diseases. They are also urged to be on the lookout for displaced animals and snakes on their property.
Officials say the Pontoon Bridge will remain closed until further notice. Also, Carter's Cut Canal will be closed to all boat traffic west up to the Pontoon Bridge until further notice.
