THIS IS A FOX44 NEWS UPDATE: Ascension Parish Deputies have made arrests in Gonzales triple homicide case. Jason Newton is tracking this story and will post the latest details here on FOX44 soon.
GONZALES, La (FOX44) — A torched safe found in Livingston Parish has been positively identified. Ascension Parish deputies say that safe was the target of a deadly home invasion in Gonzales less than two weeks ago.
Deputies say someone broke into the Marchand family's home and attacked them, brutally murdering two people and leaving a third clinging to life. Deputies believe the killer also made off with a safe full of valuable coins.
That safe was found in a remote part of Livingston Parish off of the Frost exit last week. Once the safe was opened, deputies found one Morgan Silver Dollar. It was package in a protective sleeve with hand-written notes about the coin. This information matched the inventory taken from the Marchand home earlier in the investigation.
A family friend also told deputies that there may have been more silver coins in the safe. Deputies say they still don't know how much all of the coins inside the safe may have been worth.
Sheriff Jeff Wiley says the exact time of the crime is becoming much clearer as the investigation continues. Deputies are using digital analysis from cell phones, computers, and video to piece everything together.
The killer(s) are still on the loose, and deputies are asking for your help. Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office at (225)621-INFO.
