HAMMOND, LA - Southeastern Louisiana jumped on No. 21-ranked Mississippi State for a pair of first-inning runs Wednesday night, as the Lions completed a two-game sweep of the Bulldogs with a 5-1 victory.

With the win, the Lions have now taken five in-a-row from Mississippi State.

Leading off the first, Harry Slade knocked the first pitch he saw from Bulldog starter Will Cox (1-1) into left-center field for a double. He advanced to third on a ground out and then scored on Brock Hebert’s double down the left-field line. With the hit, Hebert extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

With two outs, Cody Gougler’s infield single plated Hebert for a 2-0 Lion lead.

Mississippi State (14-5) cut the lead in half in the second. Freshman Tyler Fullerton, who enjoyed a four-hit night, doubled just inside the right-field line with one out. Bulldog catcher Nick Ammirati followed with a single up the middle to plate Fullerton.

Southeastern extended its lead with a pair of third-inning runs. With one out, Michael Rutland was hit by a Cox pitch. Hebert and Jonathan Pace singled to load the bases. Gougler hit a sacrifice fly to center, driving in Rutland, and allowing the other runners to move up as well.

The Bulldogs, concerned Hebert left early on the flyout, appealed at second base. Hebert alertly broke from third to steal home.

In the fourth, the Lions (13-5) added the game’s final run when Ladd Rhodes walked to leadoff the inning, stole second and came around to score on Sam Roberson’s one-out single to right.

Kaleb Manuel (1-2) picked up the win with 4.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Buck Bernard. Dylan Hills picked up his first save of the season with 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball to close out the game. Matt Pittari also tossed a scoreless inning for the Lions.

Southeastern travels face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a three-game Southland Conference series beginning Friday. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
