Student-athletes from three Southern University programs will return to Baton Rouge this week as fall camp opens in preparation for the 2011 campaigns in football, women's volleyball and women's soccer.
Eager to erase the lingering effects from last season's 2-9 record, head football coach Stump Mitchell will welcome his Southern Jaguars to fall camp Wednesday at the A.W. Mumford Fieldhouse as the Jaguars prepare for the 2011 season.
"There's no question we're excited (about the start of fall camp) with a lot of guys coming back with a lot of experience and a coaching staff that I feel will take us to the next level," said Mitchell. "We're just excited to get started."
The Jaguars first practice is scheduled for 5:15 am Thursday afternoon and is open to the public. The Jaguars kickoff their 2011 season in LP Field, home of the Tennessee Titans, for the John Merrit Classic against Tennessee State on Sept. 3 at 6 p.m.
Women's Soccer and Volleyball will join the Jaguar football team on campus as camps for both programs get underway Aug. 9 and Aug. 10 respectively.
Head coach John Knighten returns for his seventh season at the helm and anticipates big things in 2011. Despite a 1-14-1 record last season, Knighten believes the program is ready to take huge strides this season with nine starters returning this year.
"The expectations for the Women's soccer team this year is to make it to the championship round of the SWAC Championship," said Knighten. "We talked about (making the SWAC Championship) all (offseason) and the players are pretty much sold that's what they want to do."
The Lady Jaguars are lead by Las Vegas native Raedean Kurtz, who returns for her senior season with the hope of adding to a 2010 season that earned her a place on the 2010 All-SWAC second team as a defender.
The Lady Jaguars will travel to Mobile, Ala. to open the 2011 season versus South Alabama at 1 p.m.
Nathaniel Denu's journey as one the longest tenured head coaches in Southern history continues as he heads in to his 33rd year of coaching with the Lady Jaguars volleyball program.
Led by seniors Ja'Quincia Williams and Kristen Buggage, the Lady Jaguars will look to improve on last year's 14-17 record that saw Southern finish seventh in the SWAC and 6-6 at Cliford Seymour Gym.
Denu and the Lady Jaguars open their 2011 season against UTEP in the El Paso Sports Commission Volleyball Invitational held Aug. 27-28.
