St. Landry Parish Deputy involved in shooting

ST. LANDRY PARISH, LA — Louisiana State Police detectives were requested to investigate an officer involved shooting by the St. Landry Sheriffs Office.

On May 23, at 11:54 a.m., a St. Landry Parish Sheriffs Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2003 Honda Odyssey van on I-49 northbound at LA 29 for following too close. The driver of the vehicle, Charles Martin, 61, of Oberlin, pulled into the parking lot of a gas station and stopped. Martin exited his vehicle and produced a firearm.

Gunfire was exchanged between the deputy and Martin. After the exchange of gunfire, Martin and a passenger were taken into custody.

No one was injured during the exchange of gunfire.

Martin was taken into custody and booked at the St. Landry Parish Jail for Attempted First-Degree Murder of a Police Officer. The passenger in the vehicle was questioned and released. This case remains under investigation.
