State delays daycare payments again
Officials blame holidays for the mix-up
BATON ROUGE, La (WGMB)--The state is late in paying tuition for students who rely on aid to go to pre-school.
Nearly 3,000 child care centers in Louisiana accept payment from the state for low-income families. The money is usually deposited every Friday, but for the second time this month that money is late because of a holiday.
The Louisiana Department of Child and Family Services sent an e-mail to centers Friday telling them state aid will be delayed until next Wednesday. Some owners say they can't pay the bills if they can't count on the money.
"When the state don't pay the rest, it's kinda hard for us to pay our payroll, and the lights, and everything else," says Debra Smith, owner of Denham Springs Christian Academy.
The state says the upcoming Christmas and New Year's holidays should not affect payments for the rest of the year. Child care centers that receive government aid should see this week's payments by next Wednesday.
