BELLE ROSE, LA (FOX44) - On Saturday, Nov. 19 shortly before midnight, Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a single vehicle fatal crash on LA 308 near its intersection with Blanchard Street in Assumption Parish. The crash took the life of the unrestrained driver, Charles Garnett, 45, of Donaldsonville, LA.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Garnett was driving his 2000 Infiniti northbound on LA 308 when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle drifted off road to the right and began to rotate clockwise. As the Infiniti continued off road, it impacted a ditch embankment causing it to become airborne and overturn ejecting Garnett from the vehicle. Both Garnett and the Infiniti came to rest in an open field on the right side of the roadway.
Garnett was transported from the scene to Provost Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead as a result of his injuries. Alcohol use is suspected to be a factor in the crash with the results of a toxicology exam pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
The consequences of drinking and driving can be costly no matter how many drinks you have consumed. Driver impairment and lack of seat belt use continues to be contributing factors in a large majority of fatal crashes across the nation and our state. By taking precautionary steps including never driving while impaired and always wearing a seatbelt, motorists can substantially reduce their risk of being involved and/or injured in a crash.
