DENHAM SPRINGS, La (FOX44) — A stabbing at Denham Springs nursing home put one elderly man behind bars, and a woman in the hospital. Deputies say Ray Ducote stabbed a woman in the neck with a pocket knife at Harvest Manor Nursing Home on Sunday. Both people involved were residents.
"This is a first," says Perry Rushing, with the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office. "I've never seen anything like this."
When an employee tried to stop Ducote, he turned the knife on her and threatened to cut her throat, but deputies say, after that, he sat quietly and waited for authorities to arrive.
Detectives learned that Ducote and the victim had a history together. They say, he told them, he planned to kill the woman.
"To see something like this is out of the ordinary," says Rushing. "I had to ask my dispatcher a couple of times, 'this is where this occurred? This is what happened?'"
Angie Varnado says she used to work at Harvest Manor. She was surprised that Ducote was carrying a knife. "It's pretty sad that a patient can get their hands on something that could do some damage because they're not supposed to have sharp objects," says Varnado.
She says this incident is a first for the nursing home, as far as she knows. She says it has always been a good facility. "They take heed and extra precautions to make sure things like that don't happen," she says. "I don't know which aide was slacking from her responsibilities."
Employees with Harvest Manor did not want to comment on the stabbing. Deputies, however, say the facility is still completely safe.
"I would say to those who have family members in the facility that this place is secure as any you're going to find," says Rushing.
Deputies say the victim was taken to the hospital where she is expected to recover from life-threatening injuries. Ducote is charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault.
