Zachary Police Chief Dies at 62

ZACHARY, LA (FOX44) - A hometown hero in Zachary passed away Saturday night.

Police Chief John Herty had served the community in Zachary for a long time, and was it's chief since 2006.

Herty passed away Saturday night at Lane Medical Center in Zachary due to heart problems.

The chief was a involved in Zachary high school athletics, and loved by mostly everyone in the city.

Herty's friends included Mayor Amrhein and Assistant Police Cheif David Courtney, and they say the next person who's chief has tremendous shoes to fill.

"He truly loved this city. The city and the people here were his life for the past 40 some odd years, he's devoted his life to this city."
