BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) -- The largest music festival in the nation is happening right now in Austin, TX, but one guy here in Baton Rouge says you don't have to get off your couch to hear good tunes.
It's called Couch by Couch West and it is being called the antidote to the annual two-long festival, South by Southwest.
“If you follow South by South West on Twitter, it’s just all over everywhere,” one of the site’s founders told NBC33 News. “It’s just all too much. I’ve been to thousands of shows, so being among the huddled masses isn’t all that impressive to me.
Rather than asking fans to go out to those crowded shows he's asking musicians to pick up a video recorder and do it from home. That way everyone can enjoy great music without ever having to leave the comforts of a couch.
“There are some really talented people who just don’t’ get the chance to get heard because either they can’t afford to go to South by South West or they families that prevent them from going. This is a way to give those people a voice, too.”
In case you’re wondering why we haven’t mentioned the name of the person we’re quoting, it’s because he asked us not to. Rather, he wants to be referred to as the name Baron Childs. The purpose, he says, is that Couch by Couch West is not about exposure or making money, but rather the focus should be on the music.
“We’re not making any money off this, it actually costs us money,” Childs explained. “Since I was 11-years old I was a huge supporter of music, so it does my heart good to see a lot of people clinging to this and excited to be a part of it,” he explained.
If you’re a musician interested in submitting to the site all you have to do is upload your original video to YouTube, then copy and paste the link onto the submission form located on the Couch by Couch West website. From there, the site’s administrators work to get the entries put in one cohesive location.
“A lot of people are just doing it with their iPhones,” he explained. “The only thing that we ask is that the videos are exclusive to Couch by Couch West. We don’t think that’s too much to ask.”
Although this is the first year Couch by Couch West has had an official website, the whole thing actually got started in 2011 with a Tumbler account. Since launching the site over the weekend, they movement has already gained over a hundred submissions.
“We’re getting like 4,000 people a day to the site, and it just started yesterday,” he notes. “There have been some really great write ups about it and it’s getting some good publicity. I think people just really appreciate it.”
Couch by Couch West will continue to accept submissions through March 17, 2012, which coincides with the final day of South by South West in Austin.
