Local seafood restaurants gear up for beginning of Lent

Tuesday, February 21, 2012 - 2:39pm

BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — Tomorrow is the beginning of the busiest time of year for local seafood restaurants – Lent. Over the next month and a half, seafood restaurants will be packed with visitors.

Sammy’s Grill on Highland Road is just one of the many local vendors who have spent the last several days getting ready for the busy season. They say that although the big push for seafood begins with Lent, the customers start digging in over Mardi Gras weekend.

“This past weekend when Mardi Gras starts to the end of Lent is our busiest time of year,” JK Lockhart, Manager of Sammy’s Grill, explained. “Over the next forty days, we will probably sell about 2,000 pounds or more of crawfish every day.”

With all those hungry mouths to feed, wait times can get high. Always try to frequent a seafood restaurant during Lent in the less popular hours; late afternoon or early evening.

Lockhart also suggests that if you’re part of a large party, to be realistic with your seating arrangement.

“When you’re visiting our restaurant, we’re going to do the best to get you sat as quickly as possible,” he says. “Any large parties, I would come in with the mentality that you might want to split your seating. For example, if you have a party of twelve, be willing to take two tables of six that are near each other, rather than one large table.”
