Manship Theater opens new year with explosive films

The Manship Theater will begin 2014 with large booms and bursts of color. No the Theater is not putting on a fireworks display. Instead, it will feature a wide variety of independent films and documentaries in January. This includes, comedies, gritty dramas, and even international films.

Some of the most intriguing films include: In A World, a romatic comedy about the 'cutthroat' industry of voice-over work. There's also the biopic Cast A Giant Shadow, starring Kirk Douglas, about a U.S. soldier who fought and lobbied for the establishment of Irasel.

Cast A Giant Shadow, is the last film to be screened during the Baton Rouge Jewish Film Festival, which runs January 15-19. Below is a complete list of all the films featured at The Masnhip Theater in January.

KING OF HERRINGS (Limited Release)
Time: January 3rd at 6:30pm
Directed by Eddie Jemison and Sean Richardson
Starring Joe Chrest, Andrea Frankle, and Eddie Jemison (Ocean’s 11-13)

Description: An off beat look at four Crescent City layabouts, who dream big in a 'small change' world of cards, women and endless cups of coffee. Their passionate blundering, like their rants, can be at once funny, poignant, ridiculous and heartbreaking.

WHAT’S IN A NAME
Time: January 5 at 2:00pm
Directed by Alexandre de La Patellière, Mathieu Delaporte
Starring: Patrick Bruel, Valérie Benguigui, and Charles Berling

Description: New French comedy about Vincent who, is about to become a father. At a meeting with childhood friends he announces the name for his future son. The scandalous name ignites a discussion which surfaces unpleasant matters from the past of the group.

THE HUMAN SCALE
Time: January 7 at 7:00pm Description: New documentary explains that 50 % of the world's population lives in urban areas. By 2050 this will increase to 80%. Life in a mega city is both enchanting and problematic.

IN A WORLD
Times: January 12th at 2:00pm and 13th at 7:00pm Directed by Lake Bell Starring: Lake Bell, Demetri Martin, and Rob Corddry

Description: A hilarious new romantic comedy about a struggling vocal coach who strikes it big in the cutthroat world of movie-trailer voiceovers, only to find herself in direct competition with the industry's reigning king-her father.

THE OTHER SON January 15 at 7pm
Description: A classic tale with a modern twist: two baby boys are born at the same time in an Israeli hospital ? one is Israeli, the other Palestinian.

IN THE SHADOW January 16 at 7pm
Description: Dark and gritty, In the Shadow brings an intriguing film noir sensibility to a time of great political tension: 1950s communist Czechoslovakia.

BROADWAY MUSICALS: A JEWISH LEGACY January 18 at 7:30pm
Description: Engaging and delightful, Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy examines the unique role of Jewish composers and lyricists in the creation of the modern American musical.

SIX MILLION AND ONE January 19 at 1pm
Description: Documentary filmmaker David Fisher's original goal was to retrace the footsteps of his father who survived the death camps of Austria. But along the way his story shifted.

CAST A GIANT SHADOW January 19 at 3pm
Description: Lavish and spectacular, Cast A Giant Shadow is based on the true story of Colonel Mickey Marcus (Kirk Douglas), the American soldier who served as an adviser in the fight to establish the state of Israel in 1948.
