Donald Trump sues Bill Maher over orangutan joke
BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — Donald Trump has filed a $5 million lawsuit against Bill Maher in an ongoing feud that started with a joke on a late night television show.
Last weekend Maher performed at the Baton Rouge River Center and explained how the situation began and then escalated.
During his appearance on the “Tonight Show,” Maher poked fun at Trumps briefly-lived presidential campaign and his stance on President Obama’s birth certificate. Maher said he would pay $5 million to charity if Trump could prove he wasn’t part orangutan.
“If you look at Trumps hair, the only thing that exists in nature that is the same color of orange is an orangutan,” Maher said during his performance in Baton Rouge on Sunday, Jan. 27.
Trump called Maher on his joke and produced his birth certificate as DNA proof that he is human. Now, Trump says Maher must pay up.
“I don’t know whether I will win or lose the @billmaher lawsuit but had an obligation to sue for charity,” Trump tweeted on Monday.
Maher noted to fans during his Baton Rouge performance that the entire situation was comical and that he obviously did not intend for it to be taken seriously. He then accused Trump of spending too much time attacking him on Twitter.
So far Bill Maher’s only tweet regarding the feud was made after the lawsuit was made public, “What? Really? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahha…”
During his visit in Baton Rouge, Maher issued a certificate by Mayor Kip Holden that declared him an honorary Mayor-President of Baton Rouge.
