Tom Cruise has signed on for a fifth "Mission: Impossible" movie.

Paramount and Skydance Productions announced in a press release Tuesday that the 50-year-old actor will return to the franchise as Ethan Hunt, a role he first played in 1996.

Back in 2010, Cruise's involvement with the franchise was less certain. At the time, there was speculation that Jeremy Renner was on tap to lead the fourth "M:I" in an effort to bring in a younger actor who could potentially carry on series.

Renner wasn't opposed to the idea, but Cruise ended up sealing the deal to remain Ethan Hunt, with Renner as his co-star.

The fifth "Mission: Impossible" movie doesn't have a director or a writer yet, but Cruise is on board to produce.

The last "M:I" film, 2011's "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" earned $209 million domestically, and almost $700 million worldwide. According to the statement from Paramount, that added up to be Cruise's highest grossing film to date.
